Rhinoplasty Procedures
As one of the most popular types of surgery, rhinoplasty can providing patients with some of the most significant changes in the appearance of the face. There are various types of nose surgery options each one providing different benefits to the patient. Nose Surgery can be done on any part of the nose to reduce or increase size, change the span or size of the nostrils, change the shape of the tip or bridge, and change the angle of the nose.
Closed Technique
During a closed rhinoplasty procedure incisions will be made to the insides of the nostrils. This provides the plastic surgeon with access to bone and cartilage so they can reshape the nose. These incisions are small enough just so the plastics surgeons instruments can enter the nose and remove or add cartilage, bone, and tissue. Closed rhinoplasty procedures are usually shorter in length and provide the patient with a much faster recovery.
Open Technique
Depending on the desired results, your rhinoplastic surgeon my recommend open rhinoplasty. This requires the surgeon to cut along the columella, between the nostrils, to gain better access to the bone, cartilage and tissue. Open rhinoplasty is generally preferred in more complicated procedures.
Osteotomy
Often shown on plastic surgery television shows, an osteotomy require the surgeon to break the nasal bones in order to reshape and reposition them. It is generally done to correct a high dorsal hump or create a narrower base of the nose. It is not always necessary to perform this procedure. Consult your plastic surgeon if you want to know if this is the right procedure for you.
Septoplasty
A septoplasty may be required in the case of a deviated septum (when the cartilage or bone is not straight). Candidates for a septoplasty include those with breathing problems, snoring, or sleep apnea caused by a crooked or misshapen septum. The procedure requires small incisions to the insides the nose. Working through the incisions the surgeon trims, or reshapes the bent cartilage to create a more natural and healthy septum shape.
